Sweet Revenge: New Bake Shop

A small shop with a big heart for sweets, a new Riverside bake shop offers cupcakes, cookies, brownies, even custom cakes to order.

Appropriately named Sweet Revenge, the shop by owner and baker Colleen Denonville reflects her fresh, from-scratch approach. Customers are returning for items like Red Velvet cupcakes and her OMG! Brownies.

A child and youth worker at Maryvale Adolescent and Family Services, she took the plunge to open her own business full time, after making items like wedding cakes on the side.

"Everyone loved my stuff," said Denonville, who moved into Riverside about 18 months ago.

Besides, she said, a commercial chef strongly advised that opening a bricks-and-mortar business would give her more credibility and respect.

Denonville opened in December, and the neighbourhood has offered support and return business. The displays look professional, items consistently prepared. And Denonville doesn't hold back on the sweetness.

"It wasn't as hard as I thought," she said of the effort to open her own place. "It was a lot of work."

For others considering whether to open a place of their own for their cooking and baking, Denonville advises there's more to it than business and bureaucratic details. "You have to believe in yourself and your product."
